Washington 2015

An exciting opportunity has become possible at Brentwood College this year. In an effort to compliment the 21st Century Studies curriculum, students have the opportunity to travel with the school to Washington D.C. during the February break for a week. The trip is designed to focus on human rights and will include a wide variety of museum, monuments, and exhibits as well as some exploration of the city and some entertainment. We have planned an exciting, action packed itinerary for students to experience (see below).

Applications are due October 7, 2014


When?

The trip will run during the February break (6 Days) Thursday, February 05 - Tuesday, February 10, 2015. Students are not anticipated to miss any of their classes or athletic or fine art commitments

Itinerary

Day 1 – Thursday, February 5, 2015


06:30AM         Depart Victoria on Air Canada

5:26 PM          Late afternoon arrival at Washington DC at DCA – Ronald Reagan International Airport,

Meet your  motorcoach and local tour manager/guide at baggage claim.

Welcome to Washington DC, the nation’s capital.

Overview touring upon arrival on route to dinner to show you the National Mall, Capitol Hill, the Washington Monument, and more.

7:30 PM          Family Style Italian Dinner included at Carmines

9:30 PM          Check into your hotel, Courtyard Marriott Alexandria Pentagon South, 4641 Kenmore Ave, Alexandria, VA  

Private security on duty each night from 10:00 pm – 5:00 am

Day 2 – Friday, February 6, 2015


7:30 AM          Full Breakfast included at hotel

8:30 AM          Today you will have a full day of touring the Nation’s Capital.  This morning's sightseeing tour shows you the outside of the Supreme Court (go in if available) and outside of the Library of Congress (or go in if available). Also a stop outside the Canadian Embassy.

Visit to the US Capitol for a tour 

Appointment for visit to the Bureau of Engraving & Printing

Lunch on own

Self-guided tour of Holocaust Museum, Permanent Exhibit

5:00 PM          Dinner included by voucher at Pentagon City Mall with shopping time

7:00 – 10:00 PM  Evening illuminated walking and riding Monuments Tour including Lincoln, Korean, Vietnam and WWII Memorials.

Private security on duty each night from 10:00 pm – 5:00 am

Day 3 – Saturday, February 7, 2015


7:45 AM          Full Breakfast included at hotel

Visit Fords Theatre, the unfortunate site of Abraham Lincoln's assassination, and Peterson House. Attend a ranger talk at the theatre.

Today is a full day to visit the Smithsonian Museums on the National Mall on your own. Visit the National Museum of the American Indian, the National Air and Space Museum, the National Museum of Natural History, or the Hirshorn Art Museum.

Lunch on own at one of the Smithsonian cafeterias

Visit to Jefferson and FDR memorials

5:00 PM          Dinner included at Hard Rock Cafe

7:00 PM          Attend an NHL Washington Nationals Hockey Game or a NBA Washington Wizards Basketball Game at the Verizon Center **(schedule permitting)

10:00 PM        Depart for hotel

Private security on duty each night from 10:00 pm – 5:00 am

Day 4 – Sunday, February 8, 2015


8:00 AM          Full Breakfast included at hotel

9:00 AM          Depart hotel

9:30 AM          Visit Mount Vernon, summer home of George Washington, mansion tour included

Lunch on own

Visit the newly dedicated Martin Luther King Memorial, and the FDR and Jefferson Memorials

Make a photo stop at the White House.

Visit the Crime Museum.  Explore the technology and science behind fighting and solving crimes, discover the heroes of law enforcement, and venture into the dark side of the criminal mind through this intensely interactive experience.  The Crime Museum includes a crime scene lab and the filming studios for America's Most Wanted with host John Walsh.

5:00 PM          Dinner included at Union Station by stipend

7:00 PM          Attend a performance of Shear Madness at the spectacular Kennedy Center

Private security on duty each night from 10:00 pm – 5:00 am

 

 

Day 5 – Monday, February 9, 2015


8:00 AM          Full Breakfast included at hotel

9:00 AM          Depart hotel

10:15 AM        Visit the National Cathedral for a tour

See famous Georgetown University and visit the bookstore

Lunch on own in Georgetown

Visit the National Archives to view the declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights and the US Constitution.

4:30 PM          Free time in Old Town Alexandria

6:00 PM          Dinner included at Bugsy’s Pizza

7:00 PM          1 hour walking Ghost Tour in Old Town Alexandria

8:00 PM          Depart for hotel

Private security on duty each night from 10:00 pm – 5:00 am

 

Day 6 – Tuesday, February 10, 2015


7:30 AM          Full Breakfast included at hotel prior to check out

8:30 AM          Check out, load luggage and depart hotel

9:30 AM          Visit Arlington National Cemetery and take a narrated tour aboard the ANC Tours Tram through the cemetery. Visit the Kennedy Gravesites and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. 

10:30 PM        Depart for DCA for departure flight home

12:55 PM        Departure flight – DCA – Air Canada flight

COST: $2445.00

 
INCLUDES:

Round trip airfare and taxes

6 days Motorcoach transportation including driver gratuities

5 night’s full service hotel (double occupancy), taxes, and maid gratuity

Private security on duty each night from 10:00 pm – 5:00 am

5 Full American Breakfasts

6 Dinners

Meal taxes and meal gratuities

All attractions and touring as listed including 1 Shear Madness show & 1 hockey or basketball game

Local licensed Tour Director/Guide throughout including gratuity

Discretionary spending

Payment schedule:

October 15 – Initial Deposit - $500 (plus cancellation insurance of $74.00)

December 1 – Remainder of the balance

February 1 – Students must have American money for lunches and souvenirs. ($200 - $400 should be plenty)

More details and informed consent documents will be sent to parents who indicate interest in this trip.  Please reply by Oct. 15, 2014 in order to allow the School to confirm the trip’s viability and proceed with next steps.
